About Dr. Shirley Smith

Professional Background

I am deeply committed to ongoing professional development and continually expanding my expertise to serve my clients better. My training includes postgraduate psychoanalytic studies at the Karen Horney Institute and in Modern Psychoanalysis, as well as coaching studies with Growth, Inc. and MentorCoach. I have also participated in extensive group studies at the Center for Group Studies.

Most recently, I have focused on advancing my understanding of the brain’s complexity — particularly how trauma and stress impact the body and nervous system. This knowledge informs my clinical approach, which emphasizes helping individuals cultivate resilience and coping skills through insight and practical self-regulation strategies.

In addition to my private practice, I have facilitated motivational and emotional growth groups and workshops. My professional experience includes working extensively with children, adolescents, adults, and individuals with physical challenges within the New York public school system and various mental health organizations.

I am now focusing on supporting adults through individual and group therapy as they navigate personal growth, healing, and overall well-being.
